2023 Honda Civic Type R Details Revealed
Honda Civic Type R 2023- hot hatch has 315 hp, a six-speed manual, and the newest safety tech.
Honda announced formal details about the 2023 Civic Type R, which goes on sale this fall, on Wednesday. Nothing surprising here, but that's fine. The last-generation Civic Type R was a blast, so I'm glad Honda didn't change it.
The new Type R hatchback is based on the 11th-generation Civic's clean-sheet design. The new Type R still has a large wing and wider fenders, but it appears less like an anime car. It looks like an adult-designed car, for better or worse.
The 2023 Honda Type R has 1 inch wider front and rear tracks and 265/30 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires on 19-inch wheels. The original CTR had 20-inch wheels with narrower 245-section tires, so the revised arrangement should improve overall grip. Standard 13.8-inch front and 12-inch rear brakes with 4-piston Brembo calipers. The Honda Civic Type R includes adjustable dampers.
The Type R has a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine. 315 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque are available in 2023. 9 hp and 15 lb-ft aren't much, but I've always appreciated the Type R's snappy K20C1 engine. (See how the Civic Type R compares to its rivals in our spec comparison.)
The only transmission is a six-speed manual with automated rev-matching, which I love but can be turned off. Honda says the shift lever is firmer for "hyper-precise" gearchanges. The CTR has front-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential.
Honda exclusively offers a fully-loaded Civic Type R. The 9-inch central display has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. Honda keeps the Type R's color palette the same, with Rallye Red and Crystal Black as base colors and Championship White, Sonic Gray, and Boost Blue as extras.
Honda fills the Civic Type R with driver-assistance tech, unlike many sports cars. Forward-collision, lane-departure, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control are standard. Also, LED headlights and taillights.
Honda won't reveal pricing until closer to the Civic Type R's release date, but $40,000 is a reasonable bet. 2021 CTR cost $38,910 with destination. If Honda's new hot hatch is like the previous one, we have a lot to look forward to.
